Does this sound familiar?

The problem isn’t one of you — it’s the circle the argument runs in

It isn’t about the dishes and it isn’t about money. One sentence sets it off somewhere, and the rest runs from memory: one of you raises their voice, the other goes quiet and leaves the room, and the next morning you both get up tired. Maybe you said, “Let’s wait until the children are older.” Maybe you did go somewhere once, and half of what you wanted to say got lost on its way into a foreign language. Maybe you never started because “nobody in my family would understand this.” Staying exactly where you are for another year often looks like the easiest option.

The usual route

  • Waiting months for a couples therapy slot
  • Someone is assigned to you
  • Explaining what hurts in a foreign language
  • Having to be in the same room at the same time
  • The fear of running into someone in the waiting room
  • Committing to a booking and a payment before you know anyone

The sentence we hear most often

“My partner would never go for this” — couples therapy can start with one person

In most couples, one person takes the first step. For the other to come along, two things usually help: knowing in advance what will happen, and seeing that the decision stays theirs. Both are possible at Terapi Avrupa.

Start on your own first

Relationship counselling also works with one person. You take the first sessions alone and move to a joint session once your partner is ready. Nobody calls them, and nobody tries to talk them into it.

A page you can actually show them

Who the psychologist is, where they studied, how long they have practised and what a session costs is all in their profile. You are not handing over an abstract suggestion, but something they can look at.

One session is not a decision

A single session commits you to nothing: no subscription, no package. If you don’t continue, nobody calls and nobody insists.

Short answer

What is couples therapy?

Couples therapy is psychological counselling in which a trained psychologist works with a couple on communication problems, broken trust and recurring conflicts; it is also called marriage counselling. The aim is not to decide who is right, but to help the couple see their own argument loop and hear each other again. In online couples therapy sessions are held by video; partners can join together or from two different places.

What couples therapy is not

  • It is not a hearing. The psychologist does not decide who is right and does not take sides.
  • It pushes neither towards separation nor towards staying together. The decision always belongs to the couple.
  • It is not medical treatment. Terapi Avrupa offers psychological counselling; we do not diagnose and we do not prescribe medication.
  • It is not a one-off fix. How long it takes is something you decide again at the end of every session.
What does the research say?

Does couples therapy actually work?

A comprehensive meta-analysis of emotionally focused couple therapy (EFT), one of the most thoroughly researched approaches in the field, brought together 20 separate studies covering 332 couples. Around 70% of the participating couples no longer showed signs of relationship distress at the end of treatment, and the gains held for up to two years.

Who is this service for?

Who is couples therapy for?

  • Couples who keep having the same argument in different words
  • People who live in the same home yet feel like strangers, or have grown emotionally distant
  • Couples who cannot decide whether to continue after broken trust or an affair
  • Couples struggling with family pressure, tension with in-laws or the weight of “what will people say”
  • Parents raising children between two cultures who cannot agree on the basics
  • Partners living in different cities or countries who haven’t talked properly in a long time
  • Couples who want to talk, before the wedding, about what has never been said
  • Couples who have decided to separate but want to handle it well — especially for the children
Why couples therapy in Turkish?

Feelings are told in the language they were learned in

English or Dutch is enough for a bill, a work meeting, a parents’ evening. But the sentence “you don’t see me any more” is built in your mother tongue. Couples therapy in a foreign language leaves you both hunting for words at the most critical moment — and while you hunt, the feeling cools and the subject closes again.

You don’t have to explain your culture first

The relationship with your mother-in-law, the pressure of “what will people say”, children growing up between two cultures, the sense of duty towards family back in Turkey — your psychologist already knows all of it. Half the session doesn’t go on context.

Two screens, one session

One of you can be at work and the other at home; one in Germany and the other in the Netherlands or in Turkey. You join the same session separately — nobody has to travel.

You choose the psychologist together

In couples therapy what matters most is that you can both say, “this person isn’t taking sides.” You read the profiles together and start with the psychologist you have both approved.

If it doesn’t fit, you switch

If you didn’t feel comfortable in the first session, you can move to another psychologist. You don’t owe anyone a reason for staying.

The choice is yours, both of you

Look through the psychologists who work with couples — together

Look at their specialisms, their experience and their session fees. Continue with the person you both feel comfortable with; the profiles are kept up to date in the portal.

Every psychologist’s diploma and qualification certificates are verified one by one.

The first session

In the first session nobody is put on trial

The biggest fear most couples have is that a stranger will decide “who is right”. Couples therapy does not work that way.

  1. 1

Each of you gets to finish your own sentence

The psychologist listens to you both separately. They are not a referee; they make sure neither of you is left mid-sentence.

  2. 2

The loop is discussed, not the topic

Which sentence starts it, who withdraws, where it ends. Once the loop becomes visible, what you were arguing about usually moves into second place.

  3. 3

The aim is to leave with something concrete

Not general advice: one single thing that fits your loop and that you can try out this week.

  4. 4

    You decide whether to continue

Continue, pause, or leave it at one session. All three are yours to choose; none of them is expected of you.

Questions & answers

Frequently asked questions about couples therapy

Yes. In most couples one person takes the first step. You can take the first sessions on your own and move to a joint session once your partner is ready. Nobody calls them and nobody tries to persuade them — the decision is entirely theirs.

No. Couples therapy is a deliberate step towards talking before the problems grow. Many couples come not to end their relationship, but to stop having the same argument over and over.

In couples therapy the psychologist is not a referee and does not decide who is right. Their job is to make sure neither of you is left mid-sentence and that the loop of the argument becomes visible. That is why we recommend choosing the psychologist together.

Yes. Because the sessions are held by video, you can both join the same session from two different places — including when one of you is at home and the other is at work. Among couples living in Europe this is one of the most common arrangements.

You first open a free account in the portal and choose your psychologist from the profiles. At the time of your appointment you click the link sent to you and join the video session. You can sit in front of one screen together or connect from two devices. A session lasts 50 minutes; you don’t need to install anything extra.

In practice they describe the same work. “Marriage counselling” is usually used for married couples, while couples therapy also covers unmarried, engaged or long-term partners. At Terapi Avrupa you receive the same service in either case.

Your sessions are encrypted and processed in line with the GDPR. There is no waiting room, you won’t run into anyone, and what you say is not shared with third parties.

The number of sessions depends on the couple and the subject; naming a figure in advance would not be honest. At Terapi Avrupa there are no packages and no commitment — you decide before each session and pay only for the session you take.

You don’t have to have decided that you will carry on. Most couples arrive without knowing the answer to that question. The process opens a place where you can talk about it without shouting and without blame; the decision still remains yours.

Sessions are held in Turkish. Some of the psychologists also work in other languages; which ones is stated in their profile. You can ask in your free message whether a suitable match is available.

You don’t have to have the same argument one more time this week
